Performs semiskilled work locating and reading meters on an assigned route, connecting and disconnecting service, replacing meters, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Customer Service Director.

Reads water meters on an assigned route and records readings.
Checks to see that meters are correctly installed and functioning properly.
Cleans dirt and debris from meters.
Installs new meters, boxes, and covers; replaces old meters.
Disconnects meters for non-payment; reinstates service upon payment.
Assists maintenance when not reading meters.
Some knowledge of the methods and procedures involved in the reading of meters and transmitting or recording consumption; some knowledge of the geography and street locations of the County; some knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance, and repair of utility lines; general knowledge in the use of common hand and power tools; ability to write legibly; ability to use automated consumption recording device; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting and occasionally requires speaking or hearing, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to fumes or airborne particles; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Cleveland County Water (CCW) is a Sanitary District located in Cleveland County, NC. CCW is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Meter Reader. CCW serves public water supply to a population of 60,000 and has over 21,000 active accounts.
The Meter Reader position is responsible for reading water meters on an assigned route and recording readings; checking to see that meters are correctly installed and functioning properly; cleans dirt and debris from meters, and other related work as apparent or assigned.
Qualifications require education and experience equivalent to graduation with a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
